I will try hsoulette's suggestion of checking what channels my laptops are scanning.

I got this barely more than two weeks ago, and it does seem to have improved, but last night I had to screw with it a bit.

Sometimes I turn the hotspot off & on again. Sometimes it takes more than 5 minutes, and sometimes it shows up, but won't connect until after a few tries. Ok, so the problem is that after the laptops & iPad have been separated from each other, it almost always takes 5 or 10 minutes for the iPad hotspot SSID to start showing up again. Without paying extra, the iPad would have had unlimited 4G, but other devices connecting to the iPad's hotspot would have gotten unlimited 3G. I actually paid extra $25/month so that other devices, such as laptops, will also have 4G. Jan 2017, I just bought a T-Mobile iPad Mini 2 running iOS10 and Unlimited 4G LTE data plan specifically to use for my home internet connection. Is it possible to change the wifi channel on the personal hotspot in theipad 3? Other ideas? I am wondering if perhaps there is wifi interference happening form nearby access points. So the question is, what should we be looking for here? Boss went by the local apple store and couldn't replicate the issue (of course). When it does connect, the signal is weak even though the two devices are basically touching each other. He has now indicated to me that oftentimes, his laptop cannot find the ipad personal hotspot to connect to it, even though it is turned on. Then we turned on the personal hotspot feature and connected his laptop, verified we had Internet service on the laptop via the iPad. While still local, we bought 4g Internet service on the iPad, we activated, we tested out cellular data and found everything working well.

This was particularly important for my boss who is undergoing cancer treatments a few hundred miles away.he took his laptop and the iPad, figuring he could use the iPad as his Internet connection as his lodging isn't equipped with wifi. We just bought some iPad 3's equipped with Verizon Wireless 4g LTE radios.
